12th July (1913) in Dalit History – Chatrapati Shahuji Maharaj made laws facilitating inter-caste marriage

12th July (1913) in Dalit History – Chatrapati Shahuji Maharaj made a law in Kolhapur facilitating inter-caste marriage, discouraging child marriage and encouraging widow re-marriage.

For uprooting the caste system Chatrapati Shahuji Maharaj tried and supported inter-caste marriages. He said “I am a man of no caste and I will certainly encourages such things”. Shahuji Maharaj always thought in these terms. The Inter-caste Marriage Law was by far the most important legislative measure of His Highness and it embodied the ideals of the non-Brahmins in a more unmistakable way then anything else.
